Angela Johnson keeps it funky and soulful on her new album:”Naturally Me”. There are ten tracks on the album. In some of these tracks Angela goes back to the root of soul music.
We hear influences from the time that soul music was only available on vinyl. Those times that big ladies of soul would put out a single on a 45-rpm record. But we also hear the influence of an artist like Prince in the song “Say Yeah”.
Angela Johnson starts her album with a great soul song called: “To Love Again”. It contains all the ingredients to say out loud: That is soul! Influences from Stax records from the good old days are all in this song. An excellent song is the duet with Raul Midón entitled “I Promise”. The funk à la Chaka Khan is to be heard in “Handz”. In “Black Boy Lullaby” you’ll feel the love of a mother for her child. This is emphasized by using a sample of ‘I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know” in this colored lullaby.
In “I Don’t Mind” you will feel some love for Smokey Robinson’s “Tracks Of My Tears”. A truly wonderful song is “ Déjà Vu” featuring pianist Onaje Allan Gumps. Another collaboration is the instrumental “Music Is My Religion” with guitarist Wes Mingus.(TA)
