In
the tropical weekend from 9 July 2010 until the 11 of July 2010 your
SaveOurSoul crew was at the North Sea jazz festival in Ahoy, Rotterdam,
The Netherlands.
It was an extremely hot tropical
weekend in Ahoy with temperatures reaching more than 30 degrees Celsius!

JULY 9th
NSJ 2010
Kurt Elling:
On this day Kurt Elling had a great performance. Kurt is a jazz vocalist
with a voice that is a mix between Frank Sinatra’s voice and the
voice of Lou Rawls. This means a warm, dark and seasoned voice. He knew
how to keep up our attention together with his great band. Besides the
jazzy sounds he also spoiled the audience with a romantic song.
Marcus Miller:
Your SaveOurSoul crew member only saw a few minutes from bassist Marcus
Miller but what he did was excellent. Especially a song with an oriental
feel that he played at the end of the show was impressive. If you happen
to know the title of this song let us know.
Corinne
Bailey Rae:
This British singer and songwriter made a good impression. She has more
music in her body than you will expect when you hear her from CD and
when see her pictures on album leaflets.
Corinne is soulful but not necessarily a soul artist because she rocks
as well. Just as most British acts she is able put out a good live show.
The reggae song in her repertoire made her totally British.
Earth, Wind
& Fire:
The band well-known from Philip Bailey and Maurice White had a great
performance. When they started off it looked like they would do a show
on routine. As the show went on it progressed. All the classics were
so nice to hear. It was a pleasure to hear the band sing the complex
harmonies so easy. Philip Bailey can still hold on the notes perfectly.
We all had a great Friday night party with the still fantastic Erath,
Wind & Fire.
JULY 10th
NSJ 2010
Sharon Jones
& The Dap-Kings:
Walking around on in the burning sun at The North Sea Jazz Festival
your SaveOurSoul crew caught some beautiful sounds from Sharon Jones
& The Dap-Kings. It was later confirmed by visitors that the group
from Brooklyn, New York did a wonderful job. The band has a new album
out called “I Learned The Hard Way”.
The Roots:
This show was as spectacular as the previous one on the North Sea Jazz
festival. Ofcourse they played their most popular songs "You Got
Me" and "The Seed 2.0"
Swamp Dogg:
This singer with his bluesy soul style is a gentleman and he was sensational!
After his eighty eight year old mother opened his show with the song
“Still playing with the boys”, Swamp and the boys really
took the audience away with their music. The crowd sang out loud with
evergreens like “Synthetic World”, “The World Beyond”
and “I Was Born Blue”. The sixty eight year old singer ended
his wonderful show amidst the audience with a very long rendition of
“Got To Get A Message To You” a song from The Bee Gees.
Macy Gray:
Macy Gray was the star of the Saturday. With a brilliant band and awesome
background singers Macy brought everybody into ecstasy. Her interaction
with the audience was fabulous. The crowd fully participated in a song
like “I Try”. Sexual Revolution was another great song that
put the roof on fire. At the end of the show Macy Gray introduced us
to her new album “The Sellout” by singing amongst others
the track “Beauty In The World”.
JULY 11th
NSJ 2010
Stevie Wonder:
The only big thing happening on Sunday was the performance from Stevie
Wonder. His contribution was excellent. Besides his own classics like
“My Cherie Amour” he also delivered a magical rendition
of “Human Nature” from Michael Jackson. At the end of Stevie’s
show we caught a glimpse of Quincy Jones on stage. Quincy was in Rotterdam
to receive a prestigious jazz award for his complete musical oeuvre.
